On June 10th the New England Patriots announced that they waived/injured Michael Williams. The deadline for a team to claim Williams was 4PM June 13th. No team did, so Michael Williams reverts to being on the Patriots injured reserve list. By being on IR Williams is no longer considered a member of the 90-man active roster. Therefore, the Patriots now have an open spot on their active roster.

Right now, the Patriots have these tight ends (Rob Gronkowski, Martellus Bennett, Clay Harbor, A.J. Derby, Stephen Scheu, and Bryce Williams) on their active 2016 roster. Rob Gronkowski, Clay Harbor, A.J. Derby, Stephen Scheu, and Bryce Williams are all signed for the 2017 season.

By being placed on IR, the split salary provision in Williams’ contract now takes effect lowering his salary from $525,000 to $348,000. The split salary provision lowers a player if he is placed on injured reserve during the year. Since his cap number is not currently among the 51 highest salary cap numbers on the Patriots, his $348,000 salary is not counting against the cap currently. It will start to count on the Patriots salary on 12AM Thursday, September 8th when all contracts start to count against the salary cap.

With 3 (2013/2015/2016) accrued seasons (an accrued season is a season with at least 6 games on the active roster or on IR) Michael Williams is scheduled to become a RFA after this season. The low RFA tender in 2015 was $1,542,000. It can increase each year by no less than 5% and no more than 10%. Therefore, in 2016 the low RFA tender could be as little as $1,619,000 or as much as $1,696,000. Can’t see the Patriots giving Michael Williams the low RFA tender. Can see them offering him an one-year deal at around $600,000 in value.
