On February 5, 2017 NFL.Com’s Ian Rapoport tweeted that “In their long-term planning, #Patriots believe QB Tom Brady will play 3-5 more years, sources say. That’s why trading Jimmy G is possible” and that “Patriots will look to extend QB Tom Brady next offseason, source says. Clear indication they believe his proclamation to play into his 40s.”

Tom Brady, the fifth oldest player in the NFL, is 39 years old and just completed the greatest season ever for a 39-year old quarterback. Tom Brady who will turn 40 on August 3rd is signed through the 2019 season.

His 2017 cap number of $14,000,000 consists of

* $1 million salary
* $6 million proration of his 2013 signing bonus
* $7 million proration of his 2016 signing bonus

His 2018 cap number of $22,000,000 consists of

* $14 million salary
* $1 million in 46-man active roster bonuses ($62,500 per game)
* $7 million proration of his 2016 signing bonus

His 2019 cap number of $22,000,000 consists of

* $14 million salary
* $1 million in 46-man active roster bonuses ($62,500 per game)
* $7 million proration of his 2016 signing bonus

Therefore, Tom Brady, one of the league’s best players, is currently scheduled to receive $31 million in cash the next three seasons (2017/2018/2019).

Some frequently asked questions about the salary cap implications of Brady’s reported extension

Q: How much can the Patriots can lower Brady’s 2017 cap hit of 14 million?
A: It is impossible for the Patriots to lower Brady’s 2017 cap hit of 14 million since his 2017 salary is already at the minimum for a player with his experience.

Q: When do you think that the extension will happen?
A: In 2018 since Ian’s tweet said “next offseason”.  If it had said “this offseason” I would think that the extension would happen during the 2017 League Year.

Q: How will this reported Brady extension impact signing Hightower, Bennett, Sheard, etc?
A: It should not have any impact since with over 61 million in projected cap space for the 2017 season the Patriots have more than enough cap space to do anything they want in 2017.

Q: What do you expect the extension to look like?
A: Expect it to add two more years to his deal so that he would then be signed through the 2021 season. Would expect the 2020/2021 seasons to contain 46-man active roster bonuses. Expect that the 30 million in cash that is due Brady for the 2018 and 2019 season would be given to him as a signing bonus.

Q: What is Jimmy Garoppolo’s salary cap status?
A: He is signed through the 2017 season.
He is due $820,077 in cash from the Patriots in 2017.

Q: What would be the salary cap consequences of a Garoppolo trade?
A: If Jimmy Garoppolo is traded his 2017 dead money would be $213,436. If Jimmy Garoppolo is traded, Pats will create $430,077 in cap space in 2016 as a player with a $465,000 salary will then take his place in the Top 51 list.

Q: What is Jacoby Brissett’s salary cap status?
A: He is signed through the 2019 season.
He is due $820,077 in cash from the Patriots in 2017

Q: Did the Patriots extend Brady last year?
A: Yes, the Patriots did extend Tom Brady in March of 2016.

Q: How many positional players in the NFL are older than Tom Brady?
A: Zero. The four players who are older than Brady are kickers (Adam Vinatieri, Phil Dawson, Matt Bryant) or a punter (Shane Lechler).

Q: How many Patriots are currently signed for the 2021 season?
A: One – Marcus Cannon

Q: How many Patriots are currently signed for the 2020 season?
A: One – Marcus Cannon

Q: How many Patriots are currently signed for the 2019 season?
A: Eleven – Tom Brady, Devin McCourty, Rob Gronkowski, Marcus Cannon, Cyrus Jones, Jacoby Brissett, Joe Thuney, Vincent Valentine, Malcolm Mitchell, Ted Karras, and Elandon Roberts. The Patriots have an option for the 2019 season with Malcom Brown.

Q: How many Patriots are currently signed for the 2018 season?
A: Twenty-Six – Tom Brady, Devin McCourty, Rob Gronkowski, Marcus Cannon, Cyrus Jones, Jacoby Brissett, Joe Thuney, Vincent Valentine, Malcolm Mitchell, Ted Karras, Elandon Roberts, Stephen Gostkowski, Patrick Chung, Shea McClellin, Chris Hogan, Malcom Brown, Jonathan Freeny, Ryan Allen, Jordan Richards, Eric Rowe, Trey Flowers, Tre’ Jackson, Shaq Mason, Joe Cardona, Jonathan Jones, and DJ Foster. As you can see from the four above answers the Patriots pretty much have a clean slate to work with to build a team around Tom Brady.
